Star Clippersis offering guests free daily yoga and meditation

Tall ship specialist Star Clippers is offering guests free daily yoga and meditation classes on the spring and autumn 2014 transatlantic crossing of the line’s flagship, the 227-passenger Royal Clipper.

With nothing but the vast, open ocean as a distraction, yoga classes will take place in the open air, on Royal Clipper’s sun-warmed teak decks, under 56,000 square feet of billowing sails – the ultimate relaxation for body and soul.

Qualified yoga teacher Christel Vollmer, back on board by popular demand, will be holding the daily sessions of Astanga yoga, also known as power yoga, on deck in the cool morning air, with a second session just before sunset, including meditation. Christel will also deliver lectures on the philosophy of yoga and advice for practice at home.

For those who want to follow a healthy or vegetarian diet during the cruise, Star Clippers’ usual sumptuous breakfast buffets, piled with fresh, seasonal fruits, and magnificent arrays of salads at lunchtime will be available, as well as vegetarian choices at dinner.

Astanga yoga is a dynamic and powerful style of yoga based on a sequence of easy-to-learn movements called asanas. Christel’s classes, which take place in English, will be suitable for all levels and no prior experience is required. There is no upper age limit for practicing yoga.

Other activities on the transatlantic crossing include Captain’s story time, where passengers can learn about the wind, the sails and navigation; and classes in knot-tying, origami and dancing. Instead of sending emails, guests are encouraged to post messages in bottles. Evening entertainment includes all the usual Star Clippers favourites, from guest talent shows to movies and riotous music quizzes.

Christel will be on board Royal Clipper on the 16-night spring 2014 crossing, from Barbados to Malaga, departing April 12 and arriving April 28, from £1,420 (flights extra). She will then join the autumn transatlantic sailing, when Royal Clipper departs Lisbon November 6, calling at Casablanca, Safi and Tenerife and arriving Barbados November 22.
