Scottish wildlife guide for new Hebrides wildlife cruise

Innovative small-ship cruise company, The Majestic Line, has confirmed their partnership with one of the country’s top wildlife guides, providing an exciting land tour on their new 2014 Hebridean cruise, named ‘Around Mull: Wildlife Explorer’.

Owner, Andy Thoms, said: “We’re delighted to work with David Woodhouse, whose ground-breaking wildlife expeditions on the Island Of Mull have been delighting visitors for over thirty years. On our new ‘Wildlife Explorer’ cruise around this Hebridean wildlife paradise, we invite guests on a voyage of discovery, exploring the island’s rich and diverse natural world. The addition of this new day land tour to the cruise will give guests the maximum opportunity to encounter spectacular wildlife, thriving in the pristine island environment, all guided under the informed eye of our new wildlife expert.”

The Majestic Line’s new ‘Around Mull: Wildlife Explorer’ cruise is aimed at guests keen to discover the many extraordinary diverse and rare species that has made this island one of the premier hotspots for wildlife in the UK. The company’s crew of four have sailed these sheltered waters for many years and have first-hand experience of spotting incredible wildlife throughout the cruising season such as basking sharks, porpoises, Minke whales, otters, white-tailed and golden eagles.  Guests can soak up an abundance of wildlife in comfort and style aboard The Majestic Line’s mini cruise ships, enjoying exceptional hospitality against a stunning backdrop of mountains, remote white sandy beaches, and ancient castles.

Andy added: “Encountering a pod of dolphins as the vessel sails into a tranquil bay at the Island of Iona, sailing deep into spectacular Fingal’s Cave at Staffa or getting up close to colourful puffins at the beautiful Treshnish Islands, are unforgettable experiences for our guests. Adding a day land tour with David will ensure our guests are more likely to encounter a wider variety of Mull’s diverse wildlife, and learn where and how to find them. We’re confident our combined passion for this area of outstanding beauty, with the added bonus of David’s vast knowledge and experience, will provide guests with an enriching and inspiring insight into the wonderful wildlife of Mull.”

60-guest Wilderness Adventurer sails roundtrip Seattle

Outdoor adventure and beer lovers unite for a one-week brouhaha on Un-Cruise Adventures’  craft beer theme cruise on its new itinerary, Explore! Olympic Wilderness & San Juan Islands. The 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer expedition vessel explores Washington’s Puget Sound and Salish Sea from South Hood Canal to Olympic National Park and the San Juan Islands.

The craft beer theme cruise sails roundtrip Seattle departing May 3, 2014. The Active Adventure cruise includes all meals, beer tastings, transfers, adventure activities, hot tub, sauna and yoga on deck. Rates begin at $1,895 per person, double occupancy (before savings).  Travelers booked from January 1-February 28, 2014 save $100 per couple.

The craft beer theme cruise features guest experts Kendall Jones and Kim Sharpe Jones, authorities on the Seattle craft beer scene and media partners for the Washington Beer Commission.  An exclusive WAVE ale, named after the boat’s nickname, brewed by the Jones’ with Schooner Exact Brewing Company will be on tap. Guests will enjoy nightly happy hour tastings of select craft beer from nearby breweries, presentations by the Jones’ and beer recommendations matching the evening’s dinner menu. A brewery tour and tasting will be offered at both Port Townsend Brewing and Island Hoppin Brewery on Orcas Island.   A Sucia Island beach bonfire on the last night sets the stage for a session on Beach Beers and the virtues of craft beer in aluminum cans.

Highlights of the itinerary include hiking in Olympic National Park, Mt. Constitution and Washington State Parks. Waterborne expeditions by kayaks, skiffs and paddle boards explore glacial fjords and the San Juan archipelago. In Quilcene Bay, a local family hosts a home-grown oyster and clam tasting. Guests enjoy free time in scenic Friday Harbor and discover Native cultures in Port Townsend.

Travelers spend the week searching out and seeing marine life and seabirds up close. One Ocean Arctic Expedition

One Ocean Expeditions is offering an exciting opportunity to travel through Canada’s fabled Northwest Passage on a special cruise to mark the 70th anniversary of the first ever single season transit of the legendary route.
Travelling in comfort on board the ice-strengthened Akademik Ioffe between Cambridge Bay and Iqaluit, the celebratory 12-night voyage departs 25th August 2014 to retrace the deep-sea route followed by the RCMP St Roch in 1944 under the command of Staff Sergeant Henry Larsen.
On board for the occasion will be Larsen’s granddaughter, Doreen Larsen Riedel who, together with passengers and crew, will have the opportunity to enjoy anniversary celebrations, interact with remote communities, visit historic locations such as atmospheric Beechey Island, where the Franklin expedition over-wintered before disappearing forever, and witness spectacular scenery and wildlife.
The first ever transit of Canada’s Northwest Passage was between 1903-1906 under the command of the great Roald Amundsen of Norway.
The feat was not repeated until 1940-42 when the RCMP St Roch completed a West to East transit of the passage.  In 1944, Larsen undertook an East to West transit in the same season, marking the first ever single season crossing of the Northwest Passage and making the St Roch the first vessel to complete the route in both directions.
Following in the wake of those courageous men, today’s travelers will enjoy a much more comfortable experience.  All One Ocean Expeditions’ voyages include on board accommodation, all meals, use of onboard expedition rubber boots, wet weather gear, shore excursions and landings, as well as educational presentations, expedition guides, naturalist staff, hospitality staff, an ER trained doctor, guided hikes/walks, complimentary tea and coffee, expert photography workshops and access to a multimedia room and download stations.
During the voyage, there will be a real chance of seeing pods of beluga or bowhead whales, rafts of ringed, harp or bearded seals and herds of walrus, all against a fabulous backdrop of stunning Arctic fjords, cliffs and glaciers.
Stopping off at remote local communities, rich in culture and tradition, such as Cambridge Bay and Pond Inlet, will allow passengers to see both the modern and ancient aspects of the Inuit culture, and perhaps to purchase carvings, jewellery and other crafts available from local Inuit artisans.
Facilities on board the ship include a bar and lounge, a library and media room, plus a theatre-style presentation room, gift-shop and wellness centre with massage, sauna and hot tub, as well as a dining room serving sumptuous meals throughout the voyage.
Prices start from US$9095 per person sharing a twin cabin on a full board basis including excursions (flights extra).

Fred Olsen' Amazon Adventure

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ 35-night D1405 ‘Amazon River & the Beaches of the Caribbean’ cruise, departing from Southampton on Boudicca on 22nd March 2014, is the perfect getaway for any wildlife enthusiast looking to experience something ‘a bit different’ on their holiday. Boudicca’s Amazon adventure will take guests far up the Amazon River, deep into the heart of the rainforest, teeming with exotic flora and fauna. It will also visit some of the world’s finest islands in the Caribbean, including Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica, offering beautiful beaches and the chance for some welcome relaxation in the sun.

Very few cruise lines are able to offer guests this sort of in-depth Amazon experience. Because Fred. Olsen’s Boudicca is a smaller-sized ship, she can take guests further up the Amazon River, where the people, culture and colourful wildlife never fail to inspire.

This unique cruise offers a great combination of exploration and relaxation, with the exotic sights and sounds of the Amazon, coupled with the sun-drenched beaches of the Caribbean. Boudicca will call at the three Amazon ports of Santarém, Manaus and Parintins, set deep in the tropical rainforest. ‘Amazonia’ covers over seven million square kilometres throughout South America, and if it were a country, it would be the ninth largest in the world. It has been described as the ‘Lungs of our Planet’, because it is responsible for producing more than 20 percent of the world’s oxygen.

Trip planning starts earlier this year with Un-Cruise Adventures’ release of its small ship adventure cruise schedule for Southeast Alaska in 2015.  Seven vessels carrying 22-88 guests offer 115 total departures from April through September. Adventure activities, culture, history, wildlife and remote wilderness star on ten itineraries ranging from one to three weeks duration.

Alaska-bound travelers with popular Glacier Bay National Park on their wish list have more opportunities to experience the park on a small ship adventure in 2015. The line’s newly released 2015 deployment shows 87 out of 115 departures visit Glacier Bay for one or more days of in-depth exploration, most including off-boat adventures of hiking and kayaking.

“We’ve developed our itineraries based on years of experience sailing in remote areas of Alaska,” said Captain Dan Blanchard, CEO. “You will see the beauty and awe inspiring, raw nature that makes Alaska a must-see, must-explore destination.”

Travelers may choose an Active, Luxury or Heritage Adventure. Active Adventures aboard expedition vessels—60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 74-guest Wilderness Explorer,  76-guest Wilderness Discoverer—focus on adventure activities in remote wilderness.  Luxury Adventures aboard yachts—22-guest Safari Quest, 36-guest Safari Explorer, 86-guest Safari Endeavour—include adventure activities along with upscale amenities and more inclusions on board. Heritage Adventures aboard the 88-guest S.S. Legacy, a replica coastal steamer, focus on living history with crew in period costume and sail port-to-port with shoreside tours included such as Skagway’s famed White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad.

Enter the heyday of the Klondike Gold Rush on the S.S. Legacy sailing weeklong Alaska’s Golden History adventures between Ketchikan and Juneau, Alaska (and reverse).  History comes alive through presentations and skits on board and included tours to points of historical interest. Ports visited include Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka and Skagway. Whales, wildlife and wilderness are highlighted on a full day spent inside Glacier Bay National Park along with a day’s exploration in Icy Strait and Chichagof Island.

A weeklong Discoverers’ Glacier Country itinerary roundtrip Juneau, Alaska spends two days inside Glacier Bay National Park and explores around Icy Strait, Chichagof Island, Baranof Island, Frederick Sound, Stephen’s Passage, Ford’s Terror and Endicott Arm. The Luxury Adventure cruise is offered on three upscale yachts—Safari Quest, Safari Explorer, Safari Endeavour.  The inclusive cruise includes all premium wine, beer and spirits; a massage; transfers; taxes and fees; and all adventure activities from the yacht.  Rates begin at $4,195 per person, double occupancy.

The popularity of the Northern Passages & Glacier Bay itinerary between Juneau and Sitka, Alaska (and reverse) spurred the line to add more departures for 36 total in 2015. Two days are spent inside Glacier Bay National Park. Other areas explored include Icy Strait, Chichagof Island, Baranof Island, Peril Strait and Sergius Narrows. The Active Adventure is available on the Wilderness Adventurer, Wilderness Discoverer and Wilderness Explorer.  Rates begin at $2,095 per person, double occupancy.

The Inner Reaches Eastern Coves itinerary sails from Juneau to Ketchikan, Alaska and explores Tracy Arm Wilderness, Frederick Sound, Thomas Bay, a half-day port call in Wrangell, Behm Canal and Misty Fjords National Monument. The Active Adventure is offered on all three expedition vessels.  Rates begin at $1,895 per person, double occupancy.  Four departures are offered on Luxury Adventure yachts Safari Endeavour and Safari Explorer. Rates begin at $3,895 per person, double occupancy.

The Inner Reaches Western Coves itinerary sails from Ketchikan to Juneau, Alaska and explores El Capitan Passage and Cave, Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound, a half-day port call in Klawock, Stephen’s Passage, Endicott Arm, Ford’s Terror and Dawes Glacier. The Active Adventure is offered on two expedition vessels—Wilderness Discoverer and Wilderness Explorer. Rates begin at $2,395 per person, double occupancy.

With an increase in the number of travelers combining itineraries to create two or three week adventures, the line reorganized its schedule to make it more convenient. Travelers may now stay on board the Wilderness Explorer or Wilderness Discoverer for the duration and experience  up to three different itineraries—Northern Passages & Glacier Bay, Eastern Coves, Western Coves—making an Ultimate or Ultra Adventure.

In spring and fall, a 12-night Famed Passages of Discovery itinerary sails between Seattle and Juneau (and reverse) on six departures. Rates begin at $2,895 per person, double occupancy.  And an 11-night Gold Rush Legacy cruise sails from Seattle to Juneau (and reverse) aboard the S.S. Legacy. Rates begin at $6,395 per person, double occupancy.

Active and Luxury Adventures include adventure activities: kayaking, hiking, skiff excursions and paddle boarding. Heritage Adventures include shoreside tours. Fresh, innovative cuisine is served on all vessels.   Select theme cruise dates are available for photography and marine biology interests. Kids in Nature departures cater to families with children younger than 13 years. Charters and group incentives are available.
