Falkland Islands Cruising

The Falkand Islands are suffering a bit from Argentinian nationalism at the moment.  However the islands offer an incredible cruise experience especially if you can work in South Georgia and Antarctica as well. Check out http://www.falklandislands.com to get the full details.
HurtigrutenNoble Caledonia, P&O  and  Seabourn  all have excellent  cruises here.

I'm now away until the second of January but in the meantime have a look at the New World of Cruising magazine and maybe take out  a subscription.

http://www.worldofcruising.co.uk   Apart from my articles it's well worth it!

Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year to you all.

Viking Bordeaux River Cruises.

Expanding its portfolio of itineraries Viking River Cruises has announced the launch of its first route along the Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers in Southern France. Leading the way, the award-winning river cruise company will be one of the only cruise lines in the UK to offer the  itinerary, which is due to go on sale in 2013 and the first sailing will be in March 2014.
The eight-day cruise will begin and end in Bordeaux, giving passengers the opportunity to savour the city’s grand architecture, tempting cafes and superb museums. Visiting the stunning historical towns of Pauillac, Blaye, Libourne and Cadillac, the itinerary stops at three UNESCO  sites, including Blaye’s 17th Century Citadel and Saint-Emilion, and takes in the scenic landscapes as it sails along the rivers.

Aptly named the ‘Heart of Bordeaux’ the itinerary will also appeal to foodies, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy the regions specialities such as oysters, truffles and cognac. Of course no trip to Bordeaux would be complete without sampling the region’s famed wines, with plenty of time built in to tour the wine country.

On board enrichment during the cruise has been designed with the assistance of local experts and will provide passengers with a deeper appreciation of the Aquitaine Valley. Guests can learn to make caneles, a caramalised custard pastry, begin or expand their appreciation of fine Bordeaux wines with the guidance of a master sommelier, and brush up on their conversational French with optional on board lessons.

Guests will be able to enjoy the cruise from the comfort of the Viking Foresti, marking the first time an award-winning Viking Longship will be deployed in France. Stylish and supremely comfortable the patented design has been specifically created to capitalise on scenic routes such as this one, with wraparound verandas providing 270-degree views and spacious all-weather indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace allowing guests to enjoy panoramic views from a relaxing and comfortable public space.

With an excursions package, on board meals and wine with lunch and dinner included in the price, this holiday – like all Viking river cruises – offers remarkable value.

13 New Small Ship Itineraries for 2013

AdventureSmith Explorations
Adds :

Reports Next Year’s Sales 20 Percent Ahead of Last Year

Tahoe City, CA, Dec. 11, 2012 – Small ship, expedition cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/ reports that 13 new cruise itineraries have been added to its 2013 portfolio, which now represents more than 65 vessels operating worldwide

“Our top new trips have something for everyone, with familiar and easy destinations such as Alaska and Hawaii to exotic locales like the Arctic, Belize and the Adriatic Sea. Some of these trips are active with ample activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkeling while others offer easy wilderness or cultural cruising,” said Todd Smith, owner and founder. He noted that the new trips were added to support growing demand from past clients who have indicated their preferences for Alaska, Antarctica and Galapagos.

Smith, in late 2012 joined the ranks of Conde Nast Traveler's prestigious 13th Annual Travel Specialists List as the world’s top expert on expedition cruising.

“Three quarters of our clients this year were experiencing small ship cruises for the first time,” said Smith, adding that 2012 sales are up 30 percent over 2011 and that 2013 sales are already 20 percent ahead of this point last year.

Following is a sampling of five new itineraries some of which are currently offering booking specials.

Fabled Lands of the North
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/471
The increasingly popular Arctic thrills adventurers with sightings of polar bears, walrus and whales in Arctic Svalbard and Spitzbergen. While most Arctic trip itineraries focus on Svalbard and Iceland and depart from northern Europe, making them challenging for travelers in North America, Fabled Lands of the North begins in Ottawa and ends in Newfoundland, making it easier for North American travelers to explore the dazzling North. This itinerary explores the Canadian Arctic including Baffin Island and the Labrador Coast combined with the rugged west coast of Greenland. New bookings made by Dec. 31, 2012, can opt for complimentary charter airfare from Ottawa to Kangerlussuaq (a value of $1,200 per person).

Alaska Unleashed
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/22
On the 36-passenger Wilderness Explorer guests spend significant time with the expedition team guiding them into some of Alaska’s most scenic and untouched places. Although the lower passenger counts make the price point higher, the additional activity, says Smith, “makes it all worth it.” Combine this with the company’s Alaska Ultimate Adventure http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/466 for Alaska’s most extreme cruise tour. New bookings on any Alaska Unleashed 2013 departure receive a $100 per person shipboard credit through Jan. 11, 2013.

Belize Ancient Sites, Rain Forests and Coral Reefs
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/464
With the second largest barrier reef in the world, countless island cayes, accessible rivers and small ports Belize is perfectly suited for small ship cruises. Remote mainland ports allow access to ancient Maya temples, pristine rainforest teeming with wildlife and the diverse cultures of Belize. Guests booking departures from Miami, Atlanta, Houston or Dallas-Ft. Worth can fly free, round-trip economy to Belize City or receive up to a $500 air credit.

AdventureBound Hawaii
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/462
Hawaii is an active travel playground but traditional vacations miss the mark with crowded beaches and rushed activity tours. AdventureBound Hawaii offers an affordable and active small ship cruise experience for travelers seeking to experience traditional culture, meet locals, and discover a Hawaii most never know. All explorations include a slate of activities including stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, kayaking, and skiff tours with opportunities to go ashore for touring, hiking, or lose-your-cares beach time.

Adriatic Odyssey
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/472
The Adriatic Odyssey is an exciting new alternative to more traditional Mediterranean small ship cruises. By focusing solely on the eastern Adriatic this cruise offers a unique exploration of the lesser known and less crowded ports and historical sites. Guests who book a cruise departure by January 31, 2013 will receive a 50 percent discount for the second traveler. Solo travelers receive a discount on the single supplement (pay 25% supplement instead of the standard 50%).

Founded in 2003, AdventureSmith Explorations is based in Tahoe City, California along the northern shore of Lake Tahoe. For information, availability and 2013 reservations Phone: 800-728-2875 toll-free, visit www.adventuresmithexplorations.com or Email: travel@AdventureSmithExplorations.com.

While Crystal has traditionally offered 11- and 12-night Baltic itineraries, the new, carefully-crafted voyages offer abundant port time to delve into each destination’s distinct charm. Several overnight stays allow travellers to immerse themselves in the sights, smells and sounds of each destination, with nearly all the voyages offering overnights at the cruise’s start and end, and/or mid-cruise, including two nights in St Petersburg.
Expanded destination options also add more choice for travellers in Scandinavia and Britain. Two new seven-night UK cruises sail to and from Dublin for the first time, and a new seven-night London-Copenhagen sailing marks the line’s return to Amsterdam, Zeebrugge and Helsingborg for the first time in several years.
Not all of Crystal’s Northern European itineraries are 10 nights or under. A 15-night North Cape voyage makes a maiden call to Loen and a rare visit to Olden, Norway. North Cape and back-to-back Scandinavia/Russia cruises can be combined for further exploration, ease and luxury. Additionally, three Crystal Symphony cruises sail through Reykjavíc, expanding Crystal’s Northern European presence beyond the Baltic.
Enhancing guests’ experience of the destinations, Crystal’s acclaimed land programmes for the 2013 Northern Europe season feature hundreds of uniquely crafted shore-side experiences, from UNESCO World Heritage Sites and elegant evening performances to hands-on culinary instruction and adventurous exploration of the area’s natural wonders.
Through 31st December, all-inclusive “Book Now” cruise fares for the Northern Europe voyages begin at £2,262 per person including flights (based on a seven-night cruise from Dover to Copenhagen departing 8th June).
Crystal’s passion for creating exceptional itineraries and exclusive, eye-opening shore-side experiences that connect guests to the world and to each other has earned the company top accolades for more than two decades.

Singles save up to £500 on Star Clippers’ 2013 Art Afloat voyages

Tall ship sailing specialist Star Clippers is offering savings of up to £500 per person for solo travellers booking a double cabin (for single occupancy) on a choice of two escorted art-themed cruises in the Mediterranean in 2013. Guests on the two sailings can enjoy art tuition and the company of like-minded aspiring artists in some of the most beautiful settings of the Mediterranean: the French and Italian Rivieras in April or the coast of Croatia in September.

A cruise on Star Clippers’ graceful tall ships is the perfect holiday for single travellers, due to the friendly, relaxed atmosphere on board. The al fresco Tropical Bar is the perfect place to chat to fellow guests while watching the scenery drift by. Meals are informal, with open seating and the opportunity to sit with other guests, so nobody has to dine alone unless they want to.
On the Art Afloat voyages, the group will have the opportunity to attend daily workshops and spend time sketching and painting ashore together, creating an ideal environment for spending time with people with a shared interest.
Each cruise is escorted by Suffolk-born Richard Nichols, a successful artist who specialises in seascapes and coastal scenes. Richard will run workshops covering everything from sketching to watercolours, aimed at all levels of experience and helping artists to capture the dazzling turquoise of the sea along the Croatian coast, the texture of a cream sail filled with wind, or the ochres and terracottas of the houses lining the chic little bay of Portofino.
Included in the cruise price is a special lightweight artist’s backpack that converts into a seat for sitting and sketching on location. The backpack contains sketchbooks, paper, watercolours, brushes and pencils, so guests do not need to supply any equipment.
The ‘Art Afloat’ cruises are:
Monaco round-trip on Star Clipper, seven nights, departing April 27, 2013 and calling at Calvi, Bonifacio, Costa Smeralda, Portoferraio, Lerici and Santa Margarita (for Portofino). From £2,199 per person including flights to Nice, transfers, full board on the ship, sole occupancy of a double cabin, all art equipment, daily tuition and welcome cocktail party. Saving: £170 per person.

Orion Expedition Cruises’ voyage to Papua New Guinea.

Orion Expedition Cruises’ voyage to Papua New Guinea. The 11-night itinerary onboard the award-winning expedition cruise ship Orion has two departures next year on 16th and 27th March 2013 and provides a very civilised and luxurious way to explore the coast and islands of Papua New Guinea. The itineraries commence and conclude in Cairns, Queensland, seamlessly incorporating a charter flight direct to or from the ship in Rabaul for boarding or disembarkation.
Discover the photographer-within or anthropologist-within as you explore this land of over 800 languages and a diversity of largely self-contained cultures that will challenge the imagination. Until relatively recently Papua New Guinea was still perceived as an isolated world of head-hunters; a land of mythology, sorcery and witchcraft.
Bypassing the main towns, as Orion does, many villagers have only been exposed to the modern world through the workings of missionaries and occasional traders. Yet step ashore with members of Orion’s specialist expedition team and you will be greeted with broad smiles and warm welcomes from gentle villagers – an eye opening introduction to a way of life far removed from our Western world.
On these Orion voyages encounter primitive tribal cultures (and perhaps purchase superb indigenous artwork and carvings), see unique flora and fauna and enjoy snorkelling and fishing in warm indigo and cobalt blue waters, home to some the world’s most prolific marine and coral life.
In Rabaul, volcanic Mount Tavurvur grumbles, expelling smoke, gases, ash and volcanic rocks from deep within the earth. Here Admiral Yamamoto directed much of the Japanese Pacific campaign and the detritus of World War II lies scattered for your examination. Tufi’s villages are situated within a picturesque series of jungle clad volcanic fjords, tribal cultures unchanged for centuries; while the colonial town of Madang conjures scenes of a Conrad or Hemmingway sitting in a cane chair well positioned to catch the afternoon breeze, sipping pink gin.
Orion’s voyages to Papua New Guinea provide modern day explorers with the opportunity to venture to places far from mainstream tourism, yet to do so in the company of like-minded fellow travellers, in comfort and safety and without sacrificing creature comforts.
Orion’s 11-night Papua New Guinea Cultural Highlights voyage has departures on 16th and 27th March 2013. On these voyages, Orion travels between Rabaul and Cairns and visits Sepik River & Watam Village, Madang, Tami Islands, Tufi, Kitava, Samarai and Kwato Island and Alotau. Book before 30th November and save £1,750 per person with prices from £5,635 per person including 11 nights onboard Orion, all meals, entertainment and educational programmes, use of the ship’s sporting equipment and facilities, Zodiac excursions, port and handling charges, tender transfers, government fees and taxes and free charter flight between Rabaul and Cairns. After 30th November, prices from £6,995 per person.
