Each of the luxury yachts offers spacious suites, impeccable service and excellent food and wine – plus their small size allows them to reach destinations that larger ships cannot, and offer its passengers to sail in the company of experts & historians as guides & lecturers who are passionate about their subjects.

Be it a five-star expedition to the Arctic, coast to coast cruising in the Mediterranean or themed cruises, COMPAGNIE DU PONANT offers so much more than just a cruise: this is travel as it used to be in the golden age of the grand voyage.

NEW ITINERARIES

ARCTIC NORTH & CANADA

spitSbergEN AND ICELAND: Leaving from Longyearbyen, L’AUSTRAL sets sail for the iridescent ice fields of Spitsbergen where Zodiacs® will take passengers as close as it is possible to be to polar landscapes, the ice floe, glaciers and icebergs. The ship then heads for Iceland on a new itinerary from Grimsey Island, along the coast and south as far as Reykjavík. On the programme: the beautiful town of Akureyri, Godafoss Falls, Skálanes nature reserve in the heart of the spectacular Seydisfjördur, the village of Fáskrúdsfjördur founded by French fisherman at the end of the 19th century, and the islands of Papey and Heimaey.

New for 2014 is the possibility to begin the cruise with a short stay in Seattle.

Northwest and British Columbia For Fall 2013 Week-Long Cruises

AdventureSmith Explorations Recommends
Easy-to-Access Pacific Northwest and British Columbia
For Fall 2013 Week-Long Cruises

The active travel company securing matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), suggests  cruises this fall in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.

Many of these trips are also scheduled to operate in April and May of 2014.

Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey is a seven-day adventure cruise with many excuses for enjoying local wines and craft beer along with vibrant food thanks to an affiliation with Food Alliance that ensures that the vast majority of on-board fare is locally and sustainably produced.  Off-ship, guests hike, bike, kayak and drift in Zodiacs for up-close perspectives of a vibrant land and its early peoples. The journey begins in Portland and ends in Lewiston, ID, or Spokane, WA. The per person double rate is from $4,390 aboard one of two twin expedition ships,  National Geographic Sea Lion and Sea Bird, each accommodating 62 guests. Departures are from mid September through mid October. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/columbia-and-snake-rivers-journey

Historian and Lewis and Clark expert Stephenie Ambroise Tubbs will be on the Sept. 13 departure; an acclaimed chef known for innovation and sustainability, Barton Seaver, joins on Oct. 14; and Rich Reid conducts a Fall Foliage Photo Expedition on Oct. 2 & 8.

Legacy of Discovery is an eight-day, 1,000 mile journey through the Columbia River Gorge, transiting through the lock systems of eight mammoth dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers aboard the 88-guest Safari Legacy that replicates a Victorian-style steamer. This trip that begins and ends in Portland, OR, is conducted September through November and again from March through May. Washington’s premier viticulture areas (think private wine tastings), the history of Lewis & Clark, Oregon Trail pioneers and Native Americans enhance this richly textured tour. The per person double rate is from $3,195.  See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/legacy-of-discovery

Olympic Wilderness & San Juan Islands is an eight-day expedition on the 60-passenger Wilderness Adventurer exploring coastal Washington that begins by circumnavigating Seattle. There are opportunities to hike, kayak, paddleboard and utilize a skiff for up-close wildlife viewing. Iconic Orcas Island and Friday Harbor are popular stops on this tour that highlights fresh and regional cuisine and wines. The per person double rate is from $1,595. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/san-juan-islands-cruise

British Columbia's Yachter's Paradise is an eight-day journey to and from Seattle on the luxury 22-guest yacht, Safari Quest, conducted from mid September through late November and again from mid April through late May.  In the famed Northwest Passage, orca whales move silently through the water in search of salmon. Seals and sea lions lounge on rocky islets, and black bears and deer flourish in evergreen forests. Victoria, BC’s Butchart Gardens, Washington’s Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, hiking, kayaking and bird watching are among the highlights. The per person double rate is from $3,695.  See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/british-columbias-yachters-paradise

Northwest Island Reflections focuses on the San Juan Island as the 12-guest Pacific Catalyst heads south down the San Juan Channel home to spotted harbor seals, Steller sea lions and the seabirds of numerous wildlife refuges. Guests may marvel at one of the three resident pods of Orca whales feeding on salmon in these plankton-rich waters. Activities include a kayak orientation and shoreline paddle and basking in the alpenglow of 10,107-foot Mount Baker. Home port is Friday harbor. The per person double rate is from $2,150. European Waterways Luxury Hotel Barges this Autumn

Excellent Sight-Seeing Weather Makes Autumn the Perfect Time
to Enjoy all That European Waterways Has to Offer

For the seasoned traveler, Autumn is the perfect time of the year to enjoy some of Europe’s most popular attractions. The big crowds are gone and the countryside glows with the colorful mantle of turning leaves. The weather is ideal for sight-seeing, long bicycle rides, and just relaxing and watching the changing of the seasons from the deck of a European Waterways luxury hotel barge, where guests are pampered by an attentive crew.

The Burgundian Life Aboard L'Art de Vivre
L'Art de Vivre is an 8-passenger hotel barge whose interior furnishings evoke the Burgundian spirit of the "good life." Facilities include a spacious sun deck that is perfect for watching the changing season, and bicycles for those ready to “hit the road” with a gentle ride on the tow paths alongside the canal. An always open bar ensures the “spirit” is always willing as guests coast along the wine and history-rich Burgundy region of France through the beautiful Yonne valley.

Highlights of a L’Art de Vivre cruise include an exploration of the fourth largest city in Burgundy, Auxerre, and a sampling of Chablis wines at a private wine tasting. Guests also tour Noyers-sur-Serein, which many consider one of the most beautiful villages in Burgundy, and can take an optional ride in a hot air balloon. For more information, visit: http://www.gobarging.com/l-art-de-vivre-barge.

The Anjodi on the Canal Du Midi
The 8-passenger Anjodi was especially designed to navigate the 300-year-old Canal du Midi, with furnishings that include African hardwood and hand-crafted paneling and shining brass that evokes an atmosphere of elegance for passengers. It features air-conditioned staterooms with full en-suite facilities, comfortable furniture and a sun deck with a heated spa pool, the perfect place from which to take in the beautiful Mediterranean sunset.

Tours include a visit to Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back more than 2,000 years that offers the most complete example of a fortified medieval city in existence. The cruise also takes passengers through the historic Malpas tunnel, Europe’s first navigable canal tunnel, excavated in 1679.  There is a visit to Minerve’s 12th century hill-top fort, which overlooks the River Cesse, and a private wine tasting at Château de Perdiguier, a picturesque castle whose history dates back to 1375.  For more information on this cruise, visit: http://www.gobarging.com/anjodi-barge.

The Magna Carta on the River Thames
The 8-passenger Magna Carta, one of the most stylish vessels on the River Thames, features large picture windows and a well-appointed and spacious saloon, with amenities that include air conditioning and under-floor heating in each of its four, full-width cabins.  Eight bicycles on-board ensure every passenger can go sight-seeing whenever the mood strikes them.

Highlights of the cruise include guided tours of Hampton Court Palace and Christ Church College, Oxford, and a visit to Henley-on-Thames, famed for its annual Royal Regatta, which overlooks the historic Chiltern landscape of wooded hills and green fields.  Tours also include a visit to the early Tudor manor house of Dorney Court in Buckinghamshire, which dates back to 1440 and whose owners, the Palmer family, still live there.  For more information visit http://www.gobarging.com/magna-carta-barge.

Celebrated Polar Explorer, Tim Jarvis Joins Intrepid Arctic Trip

Intrepid Travel is offering adventure-seekers the opportunity to accompany prolific polar explorer and environmental scientist, Tim Jarvis on an extended ice-walk* while exploring the incredible wildlife and wilderness of the Arctic.

Jarvis is one of the world's leading explorers and holds records for the fastest unsupported journey to the South Pole, and longest unsupported journey in Antarctica. He recently returned from Antarctica where he was the first man to successfully repeat Shackleton's famous 'double' - crossing the Southern Ocean and scaling two mountain ranges to cross South Georgia, using only a replica lifeboat and authentic equipment.
On the Spitsbergen Explorer voyage escorted by Tim Jarvis, travellers will join their host for a welcome dinner and drinks reception in Longbearyen, the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, where they will stay overnight before embarking on an 11-day voyage. The group will enjoy private Zodiac convoys with the intrepid explorer, daily talks and presentations, and - subject to weather and polar bear activity - an extended ice-walk.

"I can't think of anyone better to have beside you on a venture into the Polar extremes than the legendary explorer, Tim Jarvis," said Intrepid Travel's Managing Director, James Thornton. "His infectious enthusiasm for environmental sustainability has literally seen him go to the ends of the earth to highlight the issues our planet is facing, and his passion and experience will give travellers a truly unique insight into this spectacular region."

As well as almost guaranteed polar bear sightings, travellers are likely to see an abundance of wildlife including walruses, puffins and whales. They will experience a surprising variety of landscapes, from stunning fjords to polar deserts and towering glaciers, and for those who want to get up close to the action there are options for snowshoeing and sea-kayaking to more isolated pockets of Spitsbergen.

The voyage takes place in June 2014 aboard the comfortable Sea Spirit, which in keeping with Intrepid's commitment to responsible travel uses a clean burning fuel with low emissions, conforms to regulations on disposal of waste at sea, serves only sustainable seafood on board, uses only eco-friendly laundry chemicals, and provides passengers with complimentary re-usable water bottles and Fair Trade refreshments.

Prices for joining the group led by Jarvis start from £3,918pp for a triple cabin or £5,158pp for a main deck twin cabin, including all meals on board and refreshments. Until 30 September 2013, Intrepid is offering a discount on superior and deluxe suites of up to 20%, with prices for both starting from £5,679pp.

A Chance for Truly Unique Adventure!

The travel industry is awash with claims of unique experiences.
But when an operator with the credentials of North Star Cruises makes the claim – it’s time to take notice! And before the year is out – it’s theirr claim that there will be some very unique opportunities to experience adventure aboard the mighty TRUE NORTH!
Starting with the West Papua Discoverer which flies out from Darwin on October 7!
Everybody is talking about the amazing Raja Ampats – an archipelago of 1500 islands drenched in stunning beauty! Heli-flights over the beehive islands of Wayag will take your breath away and beneath the water you will quickly discover why this area is known as the home of corals!
Join Dr. Mark Erdmann, senior advisor to Conservation International and renowned expert on West Papuan biology, on daily expeditions. See the rare and beautiful Wilson’s bird of paradise, try your hand at blue-water mangrove snorkelling or have you ever seen people on TV snorkelling amidst clouds of harmless jellyfish and thought to yourself “I’d like to do that one day” – well here’s your chance!
Let the crew introduce you to a fascinating mix of Indonesian and South Pacific culture. Jump in one of our comfortable expedition boats for a spot of fishing – you might even catch dinner! The drift snorkel at Gam Bay is yet another unique snorkelling experience and the opportunity to swim with 20 manta rays at the same time is hardly an average day at the office!
Need more convincing - click HERE to see why this cruise has only a handful of cabins remaining!

On November 12 you could fly out from Cairns to join the Sepik Soiree.
Just mention of The Sepik conjures up every thought of adventure and the longest river in Papua New Guinea does not disappoint! Our previous guests have been in awe of our ability to access the river’s infamous crocodile initiation ceremonies and not forgetting visits to the intriguing floating villages.
The mysterious Sepik also features during the Bismarck Bonanza which sets sail on November 23 and both cruises are dripping in opportunity to experience the rarely visited and postcard perfect islands of the Bismarck Sea. On one day you could be black bass fishing in the Pandi River, on another you might match wits with a monster mackerel on the outer-reef, or find yourself snorkelling over coral encrusted wrecks from WWII, or dancing to the beat of the garamut (split drum) dancers and for something completely different – how about flying over the beautiful Karkar Island volcano in the ship’s helicopter!
Again, not exactly a ‘run of the mill’ line-up and, both cruises also feature Dr. Andy Lewis – the True North’s popular marine biologist.
Click here for more details.
Of course, no matter which cruise you choose – your adventure will also be doused in our revered personal service and the equally acclaimed comforts of the TRUE NORTH. The mentioned departures also include return charter flights – no extended periods at sea, every day is an activity day!
To make a booking - contact your preferred travel representative or North Star’s adventure partners on (+61) 8 9192 1829.

Quark Expeditions Rolls Out Red Carpet For Polar Film Festival

Quark Expeditions, the leader in polar adventures, is rolling out the red carpet for its first-ever Floating Polar Film Festival, curated by and in partnership with Toronto's Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Starting November 2, 2013, the Floating Festival will be aboard Quark's Sea Spirit during the 23-day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica via Buenos Aires: Explorers and Kings voyage.

"Quark is continually striving to provide its passengers with unique experiences when traveling to the Polar Regions," said Hans Lagerweij, president of Quark Expeditions. "We are really excited to be able to bring this diverse roster of incredible films to our passengers for what is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Hot Docs selected the films with Quark's passengers in mind - their love of adventure, the environment, globalisation, the Polar Regions, and of course, pop culture. In alphabetical order, the films are:

Chasing Ice (USA). Directed by Jeff Orlowski. This visually stunning film follows renowned National Geographic photographer James Balog on a harsh Arctic expedition where he captures a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers—undeniable evidence that our planet is in crisis. Director in attendance for the film festival voyages.

Expedition to the End of the World (Denmark). Directed by Daniel Dencik. For a few weeks each year, the North Pole melts just enough to reveal once-hidden, untouched fjords. A boatload of motley artists and scientists set sail in search of life in this hilarious, breathtaking modern-day adventure.

The Human Scale (Denmark). Directed by Andreas M. Dalsgaard "It's either cars or humans," says revolutionary architect Jan Gehl, asked how to accommodate the 6.5 billion who will be living in cities by 2050. From NYC to Chongqing, this controversial film examines what urban landscapes could soon be.

Maidentrip (USA). Directed by Jillian Schlesinger. At just 14 years old, Laura Dekker sets out to become the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world. Braving waves and loneliness for two years, she shoots her own amazingly intimate coming-of-age story on the wide open sea.

Under African Skies (USA, South Africa). Directed by Joe Berlinger. The film celebrates the musical accomplishments of Paul Simon's award-winning album Graceland and investigates the maelstrom of political criticism surrounding the album's production and release in 1986.

Village at the End of the World (UK, Denmark, Greenland). Directed by Sarah Gavron. A witty, surprising and ultimately feel-good portrait of an isolated Greenlandic village of 59 people and 100 sledge dogs, surviving against the odds.

Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington (USA). Directed by Sebastian Junger. In April 2011, filmmaker and photographer Tim Hetherington was killed covering the Libyan civil war. In an intimate portrait by those closest to him, Tim is revealed to be as much a humanitarian as he was an artist.

William and the Windmill (USA). Directed by Ben Nabors. An ingenious 14-year-old Malawian boy builds a windmill from junk, and rescues his family from famine. But when the overwhelming media attention transforms his life, can he survive the massive change?

"We are thrilled to share an eye-opening journey with Quark Expeditions' passengers through these eight outstanding documentaries," says Brett Hendrie, Hot Docs executive director. "From witnessing the dramatic consequences of climate change to experiencing a solo sailing voyage around the globe through the eyes of a teenager, the inaugural Floating Polar Film Festival will appeal to their sense of adventure and curiosity about the world."

Sarafina DiFelice, programming manager at Hot Docs, will also be onboard to help introduce the films and guide passengers through their onboard festival experience. The Floating Festival will be complete with a unique commemorative program.

Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica via Buenos Aires: Explorers and Kings for 22 days prices atsrt from £8,950. Quark Expedition is offering aboard the first-ever Floating Polar Film Festival a special offer booked before September 30, 2013, to receive 5% off the voyage price plus save up to $1500 (approx. £1,000) per person off your international flights. For more information, visit www.quarkexpeditions.com or call 0808 120 2333.
